Are they falling behind in literacy development?
Are they struggling to read accurately and fluently?
Are they making frequent spelling errors?
Are they displaying a reluctance to participate in literacy-based activities
Are they compensating when reading, by guessing from pictures, initial letters or the ‘look’ of a word?
Do they have trouble remembering the relationships between sounds and letters?
Do they have poor self-esteem, particularly in relation to literacy activities?
A direct instruction approach to tutoring for reading and spelling, Sounds-Write aligns very closely with the Science of Reading and incorporates insights from the Science of Learning, including Cognitive Load Theory. The most crucial aspect of Sounds-Write is that it is a speech-to-print approach; it starts with what all children learn naturally, the sounds of their language, and teaches them how to represent those sounds in writing.
It provides a conceptual framework that helps educators and students make sense of the relationship between the sounds of the English language and our writing system, that is, the alphabetic code. Because this code is reversible, reading and spelling must go hand in hand and are taught in every Sounds -Write tutoring session.
