In education, writing is assessed in 5 domains:
Handwriting and keyboarding • Spelling • Punctuation • Grammar • Creating texts
Our screening will quickly identify where skill development is needed. Whether at sentence writing level, paragraph or whole text, we can help to improve your child’s confidence with and enjoyment of writing. It is an essential skill they need throughout school and life! The key is to use short, fun and engaging tasks, providing plenty of feedback to reduce errors and increase complexity, sophistication and creativity.
Let’s look at punctuation as an example.
A typical Year 6 classroom will be diligently working on quite high-level punctuation skills. Punctuating direct speech, for example, is complex and involved (though very necessary). However, for students who are not using basic punctuation accurately, it is not a priority. The classroom may not be able to spend the time that your child needs on basic punctuation skills as they have so much to get through. Exposure to the higher-level skills is good, but what is needed is focused, closely monitored tutoring to master skills in a sequential order.
We start with fullstops and capital letters, move on to commas, question and exclamation marks and then to advanced skills such as direct speech, elipse, colons, semi-colons, brackets and hyphens.
The Punctuation Pyramid shows the developmental skills throughout school years.
