Lack fluency when recalling number bonds. For example, 2 add 3 is 5.
Lack of recall of basic number facts such as times tables, despite good effort.
Lack of understanding for the inverse relationship of operations (+, -. X, ÷).
Struggles to identify the number of things in a set, simply by quickly looking at them, preferring to count one by one.
Persists with finger counting beyond expected age.

Mathematical concepts are best grasped by moving through 3 stages – concrete, representational and abstract. When students need more support, they often need to spend more time with concrete manipulatives and tools that represent the concept to assist them to understand. Otherwise, the abstract mathematical symbols don’t make much sense.
Concrete tools are used, along with evidence-based tutoring programs. Back to Front Maths, the Bond Blocks program and the Dyscalculia tools developed by Steven Chin and Ronit Bird were all created to assist with Specific Learning Disorder in Maths. Used together, they identify misconceptions and support numerical understanding beautifully.
